What to Expect From Botox®: Treatment, Results, and How Long It Really Lasts
In 2002, the cosmetic world welcomed a game-changing addition after the FDA approved the use of Botox® for reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face. With this introduction, we waved goodbye to more invasive anti-aging surgeries and treatments — today, Botox Cosmetic injections can make a dramatic difference in your appearance.
Botox is so good at what it does that it’s remained the leading minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the United States for more than two decades. In 2024 alone, there were nearly 10 million Botox and other neurotoxin treatments.
As experienced specialists in cosmetic injectables, including the grandparent of them all — Botox — board-certified dermatologist Dr. Juan-Carlos Caballero and the team at Warrenton Dermatology & Skin Therapy Center can help you reach your cosmetic goals with ease.
What Botox can accomplish
Let's start with a quick review about all that Botox can accomplish when it comes to dialing back the years and making small cosmetic changes. In brief, Botox works by quieting the communication between your facial nerves and the overlying treated muscles, such as those that contract to create lines and wrinkles.
Some of the more popular uses of Botox include:
- Smoothing out forehead lines
- Erasing brow and frown lines
- Reducing crow’s feet or laugh lines
- Relaxing platysmal bands in your neck
While these are what Botox is FDA-approved for, it’s also common to use this cosmetic injectable in some more creative ways, such as:
- The lip flip, which gives the appearance of more volume in your upper lip
- Reducing large masseters around your jaw to refine the shape of your face
- Lifting downward turns at the corner of your mouth
- Opening up your eyes by lifting your brows
As you can see, Botox is a fantastic tool that can make both small and big changes in your appearance to give you an overall more refreshed and revitalized appearance.
Getting your Botox injections
Getting Botox injections isn’t a large time commitment. In most cases, we can administer the injections in 15 minutes and you’re free to get on with your day afterward — no downtime necessary.
The injections themselves are just that — tiny needle sticks — and we can apply a numbing cream for your comfort. We administer a few strategic injections and you might feel some soreness or experience minor bruising around the injection sites afterward.
Applying ice immediately afterward is a great way to avoid these minor complications.
Getting to your Botox results
Botox doesn’t work immediately, but over the course of a week to 14 days. During this time, you’ll realize gradual results as the lines and wrinkles begin to smooth out. Unlike many other cosmetic treatments, there’s no social downtime and you’ll be totally presentable throughout.
As for how long these great Botox results last, most patients enjoy, on average, about three to four months of results, at which point they simply return for another quick-and-easy round of injections. This timeline can vary (many people enjoy longer-lasting results), but 3-4 months is a good benchmark.
We should also mention that the more you use Botox, the longer your results can last as the treated muscle weakens over time.
